NDVPL Completes Structural Restoration of Aruvikkara Arch Bridge

NDVPL Site Team 4 min read

The century-old arch bridge at Aruvikkara has reopened to traffic following an 8-month structural restoration programme led by NDVPL in partnership with Kerala PWD.

After eight months of careful structural intervention, the historic arch bridge at Aruvikkara has reopened to traffic. The bridge, built in the late 19th century using lime mortar and locally quarried stone, had developed significant cracking and material loss in its load-bearing arch ring.

NDVPL's scope covered a full condition survey, material sampling, crack mapping, and re-pointing using FETLA hydraulic lime mortar matched to the original specification. Drainage improvements were also carried out to reduce future water ingress — a leading cause of deterioration in masonry arch structures of this type.

Kerala PWD has confirmed the bridge is now rated for its original design loading, with a recommended monitoring interval of two years going forward. NDVPL will continue periodic inspection under a separate health-monitoring agreement.
